Ormond Beach, Fla. - Led by sophomore first baseman Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic), the Saint Xavier University baseball team has opened its 2008 season with a 3-2 record after picking up victories over University of Saint Francis (Ind.), Dickinson State University (N.D.), and Jamestown College (N.D.) during the first three days of its annual Spring Break trip in Ormond Beach, Fla. Siefert is hitting a team-best .500 (7-for-14) over the first five games this season, including a double, a triple, three runs scored, and team-high 10 RBI. SXU split a pair of games on Tuesday, March 11, defeating Marian College (Ohio), 8-5, and falling to Jamestown College (N.D.), 4-2, but stats from the Tuesday's games were unavailable for this release.
The Cougars opened the trip on Saturday, March 8, with a 6-3 victory over University of Saint Francis (Ind.) thanks in part to a 3-for-4 showing at the plate by sophomore leftfielder Tony Testin (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Catholic). Testin finished the game with two runs scored, three RBI and a stolen base to lead the SXU offense. Senior lefthander Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) earned the win on the mound pitching the first seven innings and allowing just four hits, three runs, and two walks with six strikeouts. Sophomore leftie Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the save throwing the ninth inning and giving up no hits or walks with two strikeouts.
Saint Xavier split a doubleheader with Dickinson State University on Sunday, March 9, dropping game one, 5-4, in eight innings and winning game two, 7-3. Junior centerfielder Don Skelly (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) was 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBI to lead SXU in game one. The Cougars led, 4-1, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but gave up three runs in the sixth to tie the score. After a scoreless seventh inning, Dickinson State got the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to get the extra-innings victory. SXU rebounded in game two behind two doubles and three RBI for Skelly. Junior righthander Dan Miller (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) got the win on the mound throwing the first six innings and allowing just two hits, two runs, and four walks with seven strikeouts.
In Monday's doubleheader against Jamestown College, the Cougars allowed three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to fall, 12-11, in game one, but picked up the 7-4 victory in the nightcap. Siefert finished 3-for-3 in game one with a triple, two runs scored and four RBI. Sophomore catcher Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) had the hot bat in game two going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Junior righthander James Williams (Steger, Ill./South Suburban CC/Bloom) earned the win throwing all seven innings and allowing 11 hits, four runs, and two walks with three strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (4-3 overall) takes on Flagler College (Fla.) in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 12. The twinbill kicks off at 4 p.m. eastern time in St. Augustine, Fla..
