Men's Basketball - Sat, Feb. 23, 2008
Joliet, Ill. - Sophomore guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) continued his hot play Saturday night by dropping a game-high 21 points as No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University (Ill.) went to Joliet, Ill., and picked up a 67-52 win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) in NAIA men's basketball action at the USF Recreation Center. Scott also finished with eight rebounds and shot an impressive 7-for-9 (78 percent) from the field to help the Cougars (22-6 overall) remain in second place in the CCAC standings with a 6-2 conference mark, just one game behind league leader and No. 6 ranked Robert Morris College at 7-1.
Junior guard Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC) was the only other SXU player to score in double figures Saturday with 11 points off the bench. Senior forward Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) was also strong in a reserve role for the Cougars posting seven points and team-best-tying eight rebounds. Saint Xavier shot extremely well in the first half hitting 55 percent (16-for-29) of its shot attempts to build a 36-21 advantage at halftime. The Cougars led by as many as 20 points, 46-26, early in the second half before USF rallied and closed to within six points, 50-44, with just over 10 minutes to play in the game. However, SXU was able to regroup and pushed its lead back into double figures in the closing minutes to secure the victory. Although the Cougars finished with 21 turnovers, they out-rebounded the Fighting Saints, 44-32, and held St. Francis to just 35 percent shooting (20-for-58) from the field.
Saint Xavier (22-6 overall/6-2 CCAC) returns to action on Wednesday, February 27, with a home game against CCAC foe Indiana University-South Bend (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
