CHICAGO - Led by game-highs of 18 points and five steals by sophomore guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College), the No. 11 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team moved a step closer to winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Saturday night with a 74-58 road victory over Robert Morris College (Ill.) at the Gentile Center in Chicago. The Cougars (21-6 overall/7-1 CCAC) have a one game lead in the conference standings with just two games left to play in the regular season, a home game against rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Tuesday and a Saturday game against Indiana University-South Bend (Ind.).
Senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) also had a solid outing for SXU Saturday finishing with 16 points, four rebounds, and five assists. Freshman point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) chipped in 14 points and three steals toward the winning effort, while sophomore forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) also scored in double figures with 13 points in addition to her team-bests of seven rebounds and three blocks. The Cougars led 36-28 at the half and outscored the Eagles by eight points again in second-half action. SXU used its tough defense to disrupt Robert Morris causing the Eagles to shoot just 35 percent (22-for-63) from the field and rack up 19 turnovers in the game. Saint Xavier (21-6 overall/7-1 CCAC) continues its CCAC schedule on Tuesday, February 26 with a home game against rival University of St. Francis (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
