CHICAGO - With its season and home opener against Lambuth University (Tenn.) just over a month away (September 2), the Saint Xavier University football team received word that it ranks among the best football teams in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) heading into the 2006 season. The Cougars are ranked No. 6 overall in the Don Hansen's Football Gazette 2006 Preseason Top 40 and No. 8 overall in The Victory Sports Network (VSN) 2006 Preseason Top 25.

Saint Xavier will have its hands full in the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League again this fall with two other teams ranked in the top 25 in both polls. McKendree College (Ill.) napped the No. 6 spot in the VSN poll and No. 8 in the Gazette, while St. Ambrose University (Iowa) garnered No. 18 by the Gazette and No. 21 by The Victory Sports Network.

Last season, Saint Xavier finished the 2005 campaign with an overall record of 9-3 for its sixth straight winning season. The Cougars finished in a tie for first place with McKendree College for the MSFA Midwest League crown with a 6-1 mark and ranked in the NAIA's final top 25 poll for the fifth straight season. SXU also qualified for the NAIA postseason for only the second time in its 13-year history and hosted its first-ever playoff game at SXU Stadium.

SXU opens the 2006 season on Saturday, September 2, with a 6 p.m. non-conference home game against Lambuth University (Tenn.). This year's season opener will mark the first night football game in the history of Saint Xavier University and will also debut the new field at SXU Stadium, which upgraded to Field Turf from natural grass this summer.
