Romeoville, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team ran in the Dick Pond Invite hosted by Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., on Saturday, February 9. While there were no team scores kept, the team gave a very good account of itself, scoring in a number of individual events. The highlight of the day was the 1-2 finish of sophomore John Neisler (Armington, Ill./Olympia) and freshman Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) in the 1000-meter run. Neisler notched a 2:35.6, while Lowry clocked a 2:39.4.
Additional solid performances were turned in by senior Steve Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington), who finished seventh in the mile in 4:30.8, while Neisler also clocked a 4:45.0 in the same event. Close behind were sophomore Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 4:50.5 and sophomore Eli Hoffman (Mount Morris, Ill./Oregon) in 4:58.2. Bugarin came back later to take an eighth-place finish in the 3000-meter run in 9:06. He was trailed by freshman Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 9:26, freshman Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) in 9:37, and Gonzalez in 9:56. The season reaches a peak as the Cougars travel to University of Chicago (Ill.) to run in the Chicagoland Championships this upcoming Saturday. "I feel that we're very ready for Chicagolands," remarked SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister.
