Joliet, Ill. - A driving lay-up by senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) with three seconds remaining in regulation gave No. 11 ranked Saint Xavier University a thrilling 79-78 win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars (18-4 overall/4-0 CCAC) trailed by 16 points, 46-30, at halftime, but exploded for 49 second-half points to claim the rally victory.

Jackson and senior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange) each posted 22 points to lead SXU in scoring Saturday, while sophomore forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) recorded 14 points and team-high seven rebounds toward the winning effort. Sophomore guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College) also finished in double figures Saturday with 14 points. Sophomore forward Kellie Fazio (Rosemont, Ill.) led the Fighting Saints with 21 points.

The game was back-and-forth for the first five minutes of the first half, but St. Francis used a 12-2 scoring run to build a 23-12 advantage with 11 minutes left before halftime. Saint Xavier fought back and closed to within four points, 29-25, with 4:16 remaining before USF closed out the first half with a 17-5 run. SXU wasted no time chipping into the big lead early in the second half and cut it to six points, 48-42, with 14:20 to play. However, the Fighting Saints continued to hit big shots and pushed their lead back up to 12, 63-51, at the 10:21 mark. The Cougars continued to fight and tied the game for the first time in the second half at 72-72 with 2:01 left to play. The game went back-and-forth in the final two minutes with five lead changes before Jackson hit the game-winning lay-up to seal the victory.

Saint Xavier (18-4 overall/4-0 CCAC) heads to South Bend, Ind., on Tuesday, February 5, to take on CCAC foe Indiana University-South Bend (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (eastern) start.
