Palos Heights, Ill. - Behind a game-high 20 points from senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young), the No. 9 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team picked up an 82-66 road win over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in non-conference action Wednesday night in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars (16-3 overall, 2-0 CCAC) also got a big outing from senior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange) with 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Sophomore guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College) finished with 13 points for SXU, while freshman point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) also had a solid all-around game with 11 points, five assists and four steals. Junior forward Amanda Learned led Trinity Christian College with 15 points and seven rebounds. The Cougars shot an impressive 50 percent (34-for-68) from the field in the game and committed just 13 turnovers. The Trolls finished the game with 22 turnovers.
SXU trailed just once in the ballgame, 4-3, in the game's first two minutes before building a double-digit lead midway through the first half. The Cougars kept the pressure on the remainder of the half and took a 20-point lead, 44-24, into the locker room at halftime. In the second half, the Trolls made a run in the first six minutes and cut the lead to seven, 48-41, before Saint Xavier got back on track and re-built the lead back up to 24 points, 74-50, with just over six minutes to play in regulation.
Saint Xavier (16-3 overall/2-0 CCAC) continues its non-conference slate with a home game against No. 15 Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) on Saturday, January 26. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
