CHICAGO - Despite 15 points and four rebounds by senior center Kevin Lowe (Tinley Park, Ill./Eastern Illinois/Andrew), the No. 22 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team could not pick up a home victory against No. 7 Robert Morris College (Ill.) falling 78-69 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (16-5 overall/0-1 CCAC) shot 50 percent (17-for-34) from the field in the game, but had trouble hitting their free throws going 8-for-18 (44 percent) on the night.
The game was tight throughout with six ties and 11 lead changes. The visiting Eagles were not able to pull away for good until the final two minutes of regulation. Lowe was impressive for SXU shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the field en route to his 15-point output. Sophomore guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) posted 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while junior forward Adam Gregoriou (Burbank, Ill./Brother Rice) had 12 points and four steals for SXU.
Robert Morris shot well from the field hitting 57 percent (27-for-47) of its shots on the night and was led by senior forward Othyus Jeffers (Chicago, Ill./UIC) with game-highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds. In the first half, Robert Morris had trouble taking care of the ball committing 17 turnovers, which helped the Cougars take a 35-34 lead into the locker room at the half. However, after halftime, the Eagles shot 60 percent (12-for-20) from the field and had just nine turnovers to help secure the victory. Saint Xavier (16-4 overall) continues its CCAC slate with a road game against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) on Saturday, January 26. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start in Chicago.
