Hammond, Ind. - A three-pointer by junior guard Paris Davis (Maywood, Ill./St. Joseph's) with under 10 seconds remaining in regulation lifted Saint Xavier University to a thrilling 67-64 victory over Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) in non-conference NAIA men's basketball action Wednesday night in Hammond, Ind. Junior guard Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC) led the Cougars with team-highs of 19 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Davis finished the game with nine points for SXU, while senior guard Alok Aiyar (Hanover Park, Ill./UIC/Bartlett) was the lone starter to score in double figures Wednesday finishing with 12 points. Aiyar also finished with six steals, a game-high. The Cougars controlled the game in the first half trailing just once and leading by as many as nine points. However, despite leading 32-26 at halftime, SXU quickly lost its lead early in the second half and fell behind by as many as 11 points. The Cougars fought back late and tied the game, 54-54, with just under four minutes to play. The game remained tight the rest of the way until Davis' late-game heroics put SXU ahead for good. Davis scored the final five points of the game for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (15-4 overall) continues its season next week with a home game against East-West University (Ill.) on Thursday, January 17. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
