Women's Basketball - Fri, Jan. 4, 2008
CHICAGO - A pair of big games by senior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange) and sophomore forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) led to a pair of non-conference victories late this week for the No. 8 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team. Behind 15 points and five rebounds by Heine, the Cougars defeated Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.), 87-55, Thursday night at the PUC Recreation Center in Hammond, Ind. SXU then returned home Friday and got huge outings from Hannemann (23 points, 11 rebounds) and Heine (20 points, 16 rebounds) to beat visiting Harris-Stowe State University (Mo.), 80-64, at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
In the victory over Purdue-Calumet Thursday, the Cougars also got a 15-point performance from senior guard Sarah Wilson (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South), who connected on five three-point shot attempts. Junior forward Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica) came off the bench to chip in 12 points and five rebounds in the winning effort. SXU used its typical tough defense to control the game recording 17 steals, which helped lead to 26 Peregrine turnovers. Saint Xavier also took charge early offensively jumping out to a 46-26 lead at the halftime break.
Friday's game proved to be a little tougher as Harris-Stowe State was ranked among the NAIA's top 25 (No. 24) earlier this season. The Cougars jumped out to an early lead going up by as many as 21 points in first half action, but struggled to keep the big lead late and led by just eight points, 40-32, at the half. Although Saint Xavier never trailed in the game, the Hornets were able to tie the score, 44-44, in the first three minutes of the second half. The Cougars responded with a 7-0 run to take back control of the game and led the rest of the way. In addition to the double-double performances by Hannemann and Heine, sophomore guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College) also had a big game Friday for SXU finishing with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Senior point guard Chanel Ross led HSSU with 17 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, and five steals.
Saint Xavier (12-3 overall) takes a week off and returns to action on Saturday, January 12, with a non-conference home game against Trinity International University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
