CHICAGO - Behind team-highs of 18 points and nine rebounds by senior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange), No. 8 ranked Saint Xavier University hung on to claim an 82-73 win over Doane College (Neb.) in the championship game of the 2007 SXU Women's Basketball Christmas Tip-off Tournament Saturday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Following the game, Heine was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP), while senior guard Sarah Wilson (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) and sophomore guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College) earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. The Cougars (10-3 overall) applied plenty of pressure on defense recording 15 steals, which helped force 25 Tiger turnovers.
SXU had five players, including Heine, score in double figures in Saturday's big victory. McClain finished the game with 13 points to go along with her four steals, while Wilson came off the bench to score 12 points off four three-pointers. Senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) posted 11 points for the Cougars and sophomore forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. Saint Xavier led 43-30 at the halftime break and never trailed in the second half despite the Tigers closing the gap to seven points during a late rally.
