CHICAGO - Led by a game-high 19 points by sophomore guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College), the No. 8 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team used a strong second half to pull away from Huntington University (Ind.) and won 93-65 Friday in its own SXU Christmas Tip-off Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (9-3 overall) advance to Saturday's tournament championship game and will face Doane College (Neb.) at 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center.
Saint Xavier scored 55 points in the second half to put the game away after leading by just nine points, 38-29, at the halftime break. The host team shot 61 percent from the field (19-for-31) after halftime and 57 percent (36-for-63) in the game. In addition to McClain, SXU had a host of other key performers in Friday's victory. Senior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange) posted 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Cougars, while senior guard Sarah Wilson (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) and sophomore forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Saint Xavier also got a solid all-around effort from freshman point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) with five points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals.
In other tournament action Friday, St. Ambrose University (Iowa) pulled out a 71-64 win over University of St. Francis (Ill.) behind 18 points by sophomore guard Jenny Clark. In the second game of the day, William Jewell College (Mo.) rolled to a 95-38 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) behind a pair of 14-point performances by junior guard Amber Parker and sophomore guard Hillary Adams. Doane College (Neb.) advanced to Saturday's championship against SXU by defeating Spring Arbor University (Mich.), 68-62, thanks in part to a game-high 21 points by junior guard Lindsay Anderson.
