CHICAGO - Behind 56 points by its reserves, the No. 8 ranked Saint Xavier University (Ill.) women's basketball team had little trouble putting away Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), 82-40, in its first game of its own 2007 Christmas Tip-off Tournament Thursday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 8-3 overall and advance to the semifinals to face Huntington University (Ind.) Friday at 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center.
Senior guard Sarah Wilson (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) came off the bench to lead Saint Xavier with 12 points, while sophomore forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) was the lone SXU starter to finish in double figures in scoring with 11 points. Sophomore guard Angie Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) and freshman guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) each netted 10 points in the winning effort. Sophomore guard Lecreia Hudson led all scorers with 16 points for Calumet College of St. Joseph. The Cougars controlled the game from the opening tip jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead and never looking back. SXU also controlled the boards out-rebounding CCSJ, 51-33, in the game.
In other tournament action Thursday, Doane College (Neb.) defeated University of St. Francis (Ill.), 69-66, behind 18 points and 12 rebounds from senior forward Alissa Holland. Spring Arbor University (Mich.) handed St. Ambrose University (Iowa) just its second loss of the season (12-2) with a 78-71 victory thanks in part to 18 points and nine rebounds from junior forward Lyndsey Norman. Despite dressing just seven players for the game, Huntington University (Ind.) outlasted William Jewell College (Mo.), 58-52, to advance to Friday's semifinals.
Saint Xavier (8-3 overall) takes on Huntington University (Ind.) in the semifinals of the 2007 Christmas Tip-off Tournament on Friday, December 28. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
