Orlando, Fla. - Despite a double-double performance of 13 points and 12 rebounds by senior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange), the No. 8 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team could not hold its double-digit lead and fell 64-59 to No. 19 Loyola University (La.) Tuesday at the Wide World of Sports Complex's Disney NAIA Basketball Challenge in Orlando, Fla. The Cougars (7-2 overall) led by 13 points, 46-33, with 12:51 to play in the game before a 17-6 scoring run by the Wolfpack tightened things up in the final seven minutes.
Senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) led SXU in scoring Tuesday with 14 points. Loyola took its first lead of the second half with 1:28 to play when sophomore guard Trenell Smith hit a jumper to put her team up, 60-58. Saint Xavier was outscored 12-2 in the final 4:48 of regulation. The Cougars led 30-26 at the halftime break after limiting the Wolfpack to just 25 percent shooting from the field in the first half.
SXU (7-2 overall) continues its season on Saturday, December 22, with a tough road game against NCAA Division I opponent Valparaiso University (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 1:35 p.m. start Saturday at the Athletics Recreation Center in Valparaiso, Ind.
