Women's Basketball - Mon, Dec. 17, 2007
Orlando, Fla. - Less than a week from earning her second Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor of the young season, sophomore forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) continued her dominating play by leading No. 8 ranked Saint Xavier University (Ill.) to a 72-68 win over Montana Tech (Mont.) Monday at the 2007 NAIA-Disney Challenge at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Hannemann finished with team-highs of 19 points and eight rebounds to help the Cougars improve to 7-1 overall on the year.
Senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) was the only other SXU player to score in double figures Monday with 12 points off the bench. The Cougars built a 12-point lead, 22-10, midway through the first half, but Montana Tech stormed back and took a one-point advantage 37-36, into halftime. However, SXU came out strong in the second half and built another double-digit lead, 60-46, in the first eight minutes of the frame. A 15-2 run by Montana Tech over the game's next seven minutes closed the gap to one point, 62-61, with just under five minutes to play in regulation. Sophomore guard Angie Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) scored six of her eight total points in the final five minutes to help secure the tournament victory. The Cougar defense also played well in Monday's win holding Montana Tech to just 39 percent (23-for-59) shooting from the field and helping to force 24 turnovers.
SXU (7-1 overall) wraps up play at the 2007 NAIA-Disney Challenge in Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday, December 18, with a 4:30 p.m. EST game against No. 19 Loyola University (La.). The Cougars then finish up the week with a Saturday road game against NCAA Division I foe Valparaiso University (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 1:35 p.m. start.
