Men's Basketball - Sat, Dec. 8, 2007
CHICAGO - Despite team-highs of 23 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks by junior forward Adam Gregoriou (Burbank, Ill./Brother Rice), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team could not hit a game-tying three-pointer in the closing seconds and fell 84-81 to visiting Madonna University (Mich.) in non-conference NAIA action Saturday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (7-3 overall) had trouble stopping the late perimeter shooting by the Crusaders, who shot 56 percent (5-for-9) from beyond the arc in the second half to help secure the road victory. Madonna improves to 6-6 overall with the win.
Senior point guard Alok Aiyar (Hanover Park, Ill./UIC/Bartlett) had a solid all-around game as well for SXU finishing with 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Sophomore guards Marco Samimy (Chicago, Ill./CICS-Northtown Academy) and Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) also both scored in double figures for the Cougars with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The game was tight throughout with 14 lead changes and 13 ties, but Madonna was able to hit some key shots down the stretch to earn the win. The Crusaders were led by senior guard Jon Battle, who finished with a game-high 26 points and six rebounds, and senior forward D.J. Bridges, who had 18 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Charlie Henry also played well for Madonna with 10 points and game-high seven assists.
Saint Xavier (7-3 overall) returns to action next weekend taking on Trinity International University (Ill.) on Saturday, December 15, in Deerfield, Ill. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
