Davenport, Iowa - Despite tying the score 82-82 with just over a minute to play in regulation, the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team failed to score in the final minute and fell 88-82 to Ashford University (Iowa) in the first game of the St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Pepsi Classic Friday night in Davenport, Iowa. Junior forward Adam Gregoriou (Burbank, Ill./Brother Rice) scored a season-high 29 points to lead the Cougars (6-2 overall), while senior forward Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
The only other SXU player to score in double figures in Friday's loss was junior guard Amir Resic (Prijedor, Bosnia/East-West University/Mather), who finished with 11 points. The Cougars shot 15-for-38 (40 percent) from the field in the first half, including seven three-pointers, to take a 46-38 lead into halftime. However, Ashford rallied in the second half and took the lead with eight minutes to play in the game, its first since the 17:30 mark of the first half. The game remained tight the rest of the way, but Ashford was able to score six unanswered points in the final minute to pick up the victory. With the win, the Saints improved to 7-1 overall this season.
Saint Xavier (6-2 overall) wraps up play at the St. Ambrose University Pepsi Challenge on Saturday, December 1, with a game against the host Fighting Bees. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start in Davenport, Iowa.
