Daytona Beach, Fla. - Junior forward Meg Willette and senior forward Janaina Novaes each tallied three points to help lead the top-seeded Lee University (Tenn.) Lady Flames (22-1 overall) to a 3-0 win over No. 9 seeded Saint Xavier University in the first quarterfinal game of the 2007 NAIA Women's Soccer National Tournament Saturday in Daytona Beach, Fla. With the win, Lee advances to Monday's semifinal to face No. 5 seed Martin Methodist College (Tenn.), while SXU ends its season with a record of 19-4-2. The NAIA quarterfinals berth marks the best postseason finish for the Cougars in the 11-year history of the program.
Novaes and sophomore midfielder Lauren Good assisted on freshman forward Mabel Velarde's goal, which came just 35 seconds into the match. Novaes got the ball out to Good, who hit a cross with her first touch from the right to Velarde to put her team ahead, 1-0. The Lady Flames' second goal was scored in similar fashion, but from the other side of the field as sophomore midfielder Marina Lima crossed the ball into Willette for her third goal of the season. Novaes scored off Willette's assist in the 78th minute to seal the win and send the Lady Flames into the NAIA Final Four for the second time in three years.
