CHICAGO - Despite leading 2-1 after three games of the best-of-five match, the No. 2 seeded Saint Xavier University volleyball team could not prevent No. 3 seed Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) from winning the final two games and taking the match (28-30, 30-19, 34-32, 28-30, 8-15) in the semifinals of the 2007 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Volleyball Tournament Thursday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The loss drops the Cougars out of the CCAC Tournament, but the team still has a good chance of securing a high seed in next week's NAIA Region VII Volleyball Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, November 14. ONU advances to Saturday's CCAC Championship match and will face No. 1 seed University of St. Francis (Ill.) at 8 p.m. in Joliet, Ill.
Junior outside hitter Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) finished with a team-best 19 kills Thursday to lead the offensive attack for Saint Xavier. Junior right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) also played well posting 16 kills, while senior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) provided the set-up with 58 assists in addition to her team-high tying 27 digs. Senior libero Emily Soto (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Junior College) finished the match with three service aces and also had 27 digs for the Cougars. The loss was the team's first to a NAIA team since September 22 when SXU fell to then No. 21 ranked Walsh University (Ohio) at the Indiana Institute of Technology Volleyball Tournament.
Saint Xavier (30-13 overall, 8-1 CCAC) will now await its seed for the 2007 NAIA Region VII Volleyball Tournament, which takes place next week. The two quarterfinals matches will be played on Wednesday, November 14. Seeds and pairings for the region tournament will be released early next week.
