Hammond, Ind. - Behind a game-high 19 points from sophomore guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team got its 2007-08 season off to a good start with an 85-65 road win over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Wednesday night in Hammond, Ind. The Cougar defense played exceptionally well in the season opener recording 19 steals, which helped lead to 25 turnovers by the Crimson Wave.

In addition to Scott, three other SXU players scored in double figures Wednesday with senior forward Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) posting a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds as well as a team-best five steals. Senior guard Alok Aiyar (Hanover Park, Ill./University of Illinois-Chicago) also played well for Saint Xavier scoring 11 points and dishing out four assists, while freshman guard Mike Johnstone (Mount Greenwood, Ill./St. Laurence) tallied 10 points in his collegiate debut. The game was tight in the first half with SXU leading by four points, 38-34, at halftime. However, behind 50 percent shooting in the second half, the Cougars pulled away outscoring the Crimson Wave, 47-31, after the break.

Saint Xavier (1-0 overall) heads to Palos Heights, Ill., this weekend to participate in the two-day Trinity Christian College Mitchell Classic. The Cougars open the event on Friday, November 9, with a 5:30 p.m. game against Cornerstone University (Mich.).
