Ormond Beach, Fla. - Led by three hits and four RBI by senior catcher Brian Grupp (Granger, Ind./Mishawaka Penn), the Saint Xavier University baseball team split the final two games of its annual Florida trip over the weekend. The Cougars (6-7 overall) let a big lead slip away in Saturday's 9-8 loss to Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) and then bounced back to defeat Grand View College (Iowa), 8-4, in the team's final game Sunday morning.
Senior designated hitter Ryan Buchler (Schererville, Ind./South Suburban CC) led the SXU offense in Saturday's game going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Senior second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and freshman centerfielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) each posted two hits in the game. The Cougars scored all eight of its runs in the top of the second inning highlighted by a two-RBI single by Buchler. However, despite leading 8-2 after the third inning, Saint Xavier gave up seven runs to Embry-Riddle over the next six frames, including three runs in the bottom of the eighth, to drop the game, 9-8.
Grupp led the offensive charge for Saint Xavier in Sunday's finale with Grand View recording two hits and three RBI. The Cougars combined for 13 hits in the ballgame with four different players recording two hits. Senior Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) pitched the middle four innings of Sunday's game and earned the win (2-0) allowing just one hit, one run, and three walks with four strikeouts. Saint Xavier (6-7 overall) returns to Chicago and heads to Davenport, Iowa, on Wednesday, March 21, to take on non-conference foe St. Ambrose University (Iowa) for a doubleheader. The twinbill is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa.
