Ormond Beach, Fla. - Behind a solid gameone pitching performance by sophomore Rick Kehoe (Palos Heights, Ill./Richards), the Saint Xavier University baseball team split a doubleheader with Ohio Dominican University (Ohio) Thursday in Ormond Beach, Fla. The Cougars (5-6 overall) won the first game of the twinbill, 3-2, but could not keep up with the offensive pace of ODU in game two.
Kehoe threw all seven innings as the starter allowing just five hits, two runs (both earned), and two walks, while striking out three batters. The Cougars scored all three of their runs in the top of the fifth inning to erase a 2-0 lead for ODU. Freshman shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) got the big hit of the inning with a two-out, two RBI triple to tie the game. Senior designated hitter Ryan Buchler (Schererville, Ind./South Suburban CC) then followed it with a RBI single to score the game-winning run.
Game two was a different story entirely as freshman hurler Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) had trouble containing the offense of ODU. Koehn threw all seven innings as well, but gave up nine hits, eight runs (seven earned), and three walks in addition to three strikeouts. Senior catcher Brian Grupp (Granger, Ind./Mishawaka Penn) and freshman right fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) each finished with two hits for SXU. Testin also recorded two RBI in game two.
Saint Xavier (5-6 overall) will take on Flagler College (Fla.) for one nine-inning game on Friday, March 16, in St. Augustine, Fla. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. eastern time.
