Orlando, Fla. - Despite a 3-for-6 performance at the plate for senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic), the No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team could not add a win to its record Thursday dropping both its games on the day in Orlando, Fla. The Cougars (3-5 overall) fell to NCAA Division II Shippenburg University (Pa.), 9-1, and then lost to California University of Pennsylvania (Pa.), 5-3.
SXU had trouble finding its offense in game one with the team only recording four hits, two of them coming from Barker. Sophomore designated player Gianna Pavone (Orland Park, Ill./St. Joseph's College) posted the team's only RBI on a two-out double in the top of the fourth inning. Junior Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss on the mound for Saint Xavier pitching the first 3.1 innings and giving up eight hits and six runs (three earned) with four strikeouts.
Senior left fielder Mary Kate Smith (Chicago, Ill./Maria) paced the SXU offense in game two going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI as well. Junior Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) got the loss pitching 5.2 innings and allowing 11 hits, four runs (all earned), and a walk with three strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (3-5 overall) will play two more games on Friday, March 16, starting at 2 p.m. eastern time. The Cougars match up with Minnesota State University-Moorhead (Minn.) at 2 p.m. eastern before taking on Indiana University of Pennsylvania (Pa.) at 4 p.m.
