Ormond Beach, Fla. - Thanks in part to eight errors over two games, the Saint Xavier University baseball team dropped both its games Wednesday in Ormond Beach, Fla. The Cougars (4-5 overall) gave seven runs in the eighth and ninth innings of game one to fall, 15-9, to University of Rio Grande (Ohio) before dropping a heartbreaker, 6-5, to Dickinson State University (N.D.) in 11 innings.
Senior catcher Brian Grupp (Granger, Ind./Mishawaka Penn) had a big game at the plate in game one going 2-for-5 with a homer, two runs scored, and three RBI. In game two, Dickinson State got a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to squeak out the victory and give SXU its first losing record of the season at 4-5 overall. Freshman third baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the day's second game.
Saint Xavier (4-5 overall) returns to action on Thursday, March 15, with a morning doubleheader with Ohio Dominican University (Ohio). The first game of the twinbill is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. eastern start.
