Orlando, Fla. - Senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in the game-winning run to help No. 23 Saint Xavier University pick up a 5-4 victory over NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State University (Minn.) in collegiate softball action Tuesday in Orlando, Fla. The Cougars (3-3 overall) lost its first game of the day, a 4-0 decision to the University of Indianapolis (Ind.).
In the game two win over SW Minnesota State, Lovato hit a one-out RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game in dramatic fashion. Senior designated player Jory Bodi (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton) scored the game-winning run from first and went 1-for-2 with three runs scored in the game. Freshman second baseman Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) also had a good game at the plate finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI. Freshman pitcher Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) earned the victory on the mound throwing all seven innings and giving up nine hits, four runs (three earned), and three walks with two strikeouts.
In game one against University of Indianapolis, SXU gave up all four runs to the University of Indianapolis in the bottom of the sixth inning following back-to-back errors with two outs. The Cougars were limited to just four hits in the game with senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) leading the way going 2-for-3 in the loss. Junior Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) took the loss pitching six innings and allowing six hits, four runs (none earned), and one walk with seven strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (3-3 overall) takes Wednesday off before returning to action with an 11 a.m. (eastern) match-up against NCAA Division II Shippenburg University of Pennsylvania (Pa.). SXU follows that game with a 2 p.m. game against California University of Pennsylvania (Pa.).
