Orlando, Fla. - Despite three hits, three runs scored, and four RBI by senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic), the No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team could not pick up a victory Monday dropping two, one-run heartbreakers in Orlando, Fla. The Cougars (2-2 overall) lost to No. 13 ranked Tiffin University (Ohio), 7-6, in the first game and then fell 3-2 to No. 1 ranked (NCAA Division II) Lock Haven-University of Pennsylvania (Pa.).

Barker recorded two doubles and went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI in game one against Tiffin, while senior first baseman Jory Bodi (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton) went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Junior pitcher Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) pitched the game's first five innings and allowed six hits, six runs (two earned), and two walks with three strikeouts. Bodi took the loss throwing the final two innings and giving up four hits and one run with one strikeout.

In the second game of the day, SXU nearly overcame a three-run deficit, but fell 3-2 to Lock Haven-University of Pennsylvania. Freshman pitcher Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) pitched all six innings and gave up seven hits, three runs (one earned), and no walks with four strikeouts. Senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) and sophomore catcher Gianna Pavone (Orland Park, Ill./St. Joseph's College) each posted a hit and a RBI in the game.

Saint Xavier (2-2 overall) continues play on its Florida trip on Tuesday, March 13, with a 12 p.m. game (central) against University of Indianapolis (Ind.) followed by a 2 p.m. game (central) against Southwest Minnesota State University. Both schools are NCAA Division II institutions.
