CHICAGO - Despite 20 points from junior center Kevin Lowe (Tinley Park, Ill./Eastern Illinois University), the No. 3 seeded Saint Xavier University men's basketball team could not slow down the high-powered offense of No. 1 Robert Morris College (Ill.) falling, 112-78, in the championship game of the 2007 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Saturday at the Gentile Center in Chicago. The Eagles improve to a perfect 29-0 on the season with the win and earn an automatic bid to participate in the 2007 NAIA Men's Basketball National Championships, which begins on March 14 in Kansas City, Mo. The Cougars fall to 20-11 overall with the loss.
Sophomore forward Adam Gregoriou (Burbank, Ill./Brother Rice) scored 16 points for SXU, while senior guard Shawn Monroe (Chicago, Ill./Lindblom) chipped in 14 points in Saturday's championship. Senior forward Freeman Taylor led the Eagles with game-highs of 25 points and 16 rebounds. Saint Xavier shot 36.2 percent (25-for-69) from the field in the game, including a 9-for-14 clip (64 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. However, the Eagles were on fire from all areas of the court hitting 54 percent (44-for-82) of its shots, including 12 of their 25 three-point attempts (48 percent). RMC were dominate on the boards in the game out-rebounding SXU, 51-34, in the ballgame.
Saint Xavier (20-11 overall/5-5 CCAC) have a slim chance of receiving an at-large bid for the upcoming NAIA National Championships, which begin on March 14 in Kansas City, Mo. Seedings for the national tournament will be released by the NAIA national office on Tuesday, March 6.
