Joliet, Ill. - Led by six players scoring in double figures, the No. 3 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team picked up a big 79-63 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory on the road Tuesday night defeating University of St. Francis (Ill.) at the USF Recreation Center in Joliet, Ill. Junior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange) led the Cougars with team-highs of 16 points and seven rebounds as SXU won its tenth straight game Tuesday.
Senior guard Dani Engleman (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) had an outstanding individual effort in the victory posting 12 points, four rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young), sophomore forward Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica), and freshman forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) each finished with 11 points for the Cougars, while senior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) wrapped up the double-digit scorers with 10 points. Sophomore guard Brittani Hunter led the Fighting Saints with 12 points.
In the first 10 minutes of the first half, the game stayed tight with USF able to take a 20-19 lead with 10:04 left in the first half. However, Saint Xavier closed out the half on a 24-15 run to take a 43-35 advantage into the locker room at halftime. In the second half, early turnovers plagued the Fighting Saints, which helped SXU extend its lead to double digits. The Cougars built a 22-point advantage twice in the second half and USF was never able to seriously threaten.
Saint Xavier (25-2 overall/9-1 CCAC) wraps up its regular season slate on Saturday, February 24, with a game against CCAC foe Indiana University-South Bend. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (eastern) start.
