Bloomington, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team traveled to Bloomington, Ill., to take part in the 2007 Titan Open on Saturday, February, 3. Head coach Ed McAllister brought four runners who participated in four events. Junior Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) placed 10th overall among 29 runners in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:43 and then came back and placed eighth overall among 34 runners in the 3000 meters in the of 9:03. Sophomore Ronald Lavaire (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) placed 14th among 39 runners in the mile in a time of 4:39. Freshmen Eli Hoffman (Mount Morris, Ill./Oregon) and John Neisler (Armington, Ill./Olympia) both competed in the 800 meter run. Neisler finished ninth among 48 athletes in 1:58.2, while Hoffman finished in 16th place in 2:01.6.
"I am quite optimistic in the performances of the athletes overall," commented McAllister. "Both Bugarin and Neisler came very close to meeting the NAIA National qualifying standards and I'm quite confident that both will hit the marks in the upcoming weeks. Lavaire and Hoffman ran very well and are personally not that far from qualifying also. We get stronger every week."
The Cougars run a split schedule this week, with some of the athletes going to DePauw University, while others are competing at Lewis University. "I pick the meets to put us in the best positions possible to meets the qualifying standards," stated McAllister.
