CHICAGO - Behind a game-high 19 points and seven assists from senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young), No. 4 Saint Xavier University pulled away late in the second half to defeat Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB), 58-47, in NAIA women's basketball action Tuesday night at the Shannon Center Saturday in Chicago. Senior guard Dani Engleman (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) dished out a career-high 10 assists on the night as the Cougars improved to 20-2 overall on the season and 5-1 in the conference. IUSB falls to 6-17 overall and 2-4 in league play with the loss.
Senior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) and junior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange) also both scored in double figures in Tuesday's win finishing with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Brown also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in the winning effort. Junior guard Stacy Spurgeon led Indiana-South Bend with 13 points, while junior forward Kristen Estridge chipped in 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
The Cougar defense had a solid outing holding IUSB to just 17 second-half points and helping to force 23 Titan turnovers in the ballgame behind 15 steals. SXU jumped out to an early 26-15 lead in the game's first 11 minutes, but scored just two points over the next 6:30 to allow IUSB to creep back. With a 35-30 lead at the half, the Cougars were able to keep the Titans at bay, but did not build a double-digit advantage until the final five minutes of regulation. SXU never trailed in the ballgame despite shooting 43 percent (26-for-61) from the field and 14 percent (3-for-21) from beyond the three-point arc.
Saint Xavier (20-2 overall/5-1 CCAC) will have revenge on its mind on Saturday, February 3, hosting CCAC rival Olivet Nazarene University, the only NAIA team to defeat the Cougars this season. The Saturday game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Shannon Center.
