Women's Soccer - Wed, Jan. 17, 2007
Indianapolis, Ind. - Saint Xavier University women's soccer coach Derek Begich was named the 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas NAIA Women's Midwest Region Coach of the Year last week at the NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. Only eight NAIA women's soccer coaches from across the nation were selected, one from each of the geographic (Mid-Atlantic, Southwest, etc.) regions that makes up the United States.

"This is a great honor, because there are so many great NAIA women's soccer coaches in the Midwest region," said Begich. "The real credit goes to my team though, because they were determined all season long to make it to the NAIA National Tournament and then went out and made it happen. I am so proud of what they were able to accomplish." Saint Xavier earned its first-ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament last fall and finished with a school-record 19-4 overall record. The Cougars ended their season on November 17, 2006, in the second round of the national tourney with a 2-0 loss to No. 7 ranked Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.).
