CHICAGO - Behind game-highs of 20 points, seven assists, and five steals from freshman guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team used a late second-half run to pull away and defeat Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), 68-52, in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 14-6 overall and even up their conference record at 1-1. IIT falls to 3-16 overall and 0-2 in league play with the loss.
Three other SXU players scored in double figures in Saturday's victory over IIT. Junior center Kevin Lowe (Tinley Park, Ill./Eastern Illinois University) had a nice outing with 15 points and game-high 10 rebounds, while senior guard Ken McCormick (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) turned in a 12-point performance. Sophomore forward Adam Gregoriou (Burbank, Ill./Brother Rice) also had a good game off the bench chipping in 11 points and pulling down eight rebounds.
With a 30-25 lead at halftime, SXU shot an impressive 52 percent from the field (12-for-23) after the break to out-score the Scarlet Hawks, 38-27, in the second half. IIT shot just 35 percent (21-for-60) and was plagued by 15 turnovers in the game. Junior forward Sasha Sudar and sophomore forward Bobby McQueen, who each finished with 11 points, led the Scarlet Hawks.
Saint Xavier (14-6 overall/1-1 CCAC) continues its conference slate on the road on Wednesday, January 24, facing No. 1 ranked Robert Morris College (Ill.) at the Gentile Center in Chicago. The start time for the game is 7:30 p.m.
