Cypress, Calif. - Saint Xavier University baseball coach Mike Dooley was recently named the 2006 Diamond Sports-American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Regional Coach of the Year for the NAIA when Diamond Sports Company, Inc., in Cypress, Calif, announced the honor in late December. Dooley was recognized and presented the award at the 2007 ABCA Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet in Orlando, Fla., last Friday.
"The thing that makes this award so special is that it is decided by other baseball coaches," said Dooley. "When your peers recognize your accomplishments, it is a great honor. My players and assistant coaches deserve a lot of credit as well, because it was their heart and determination that allowed us to have such an impressive year."
SXU finished the 2006 season with an overall record of 33-27. The Cougars defeated Madonna University (Mich.) in the 2006 Heartland Super Regional best-of-three series to advance to the NAIA World Series for the first time since 1988 before dropping two games to Bellevue University (Neb.) and eventual 2006 champion Lewis-Clark State University (Idaho), respectively.
Saint Xavier opens its 2007 season on March 10 with a doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan College (W.V.) in Ormond Beach, Fla. The twinbill is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. central time.
