CHICAGO - Junior forward Angie Holmes (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished with three goals and an assist as the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team cruised to a 7-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) win over visiting Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Saturday at SXU Stadium in Chicago. The Cougars extend their winning streak to five games with Saturday's victory and improve to 9-2-1 overall and 4-1 in the CCAC this season.
Senior midfielder Jen Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) and sophomore midfielder Aleks Sudar (Omaha, Neb./Bryan) also had impressive individual performances for SXU Saturday with each recording a goal and two assists. Sophomore midfielder Natalie Liakopoulos (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) and freshman defender Meghan Kelly (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) scored a goal apiece for the Cougars as well with junior midfielder Danielle Scartozzi (Crete, Ill./Calumet College) and freshman midfielder Breanna Cashel (Arnold, Mo./St. Pius X) each providing an assist.
Saint Xavier had 16 shots on goal in the game compared to just five for the Scarlet Hawks. The Cougars led 2-1 at halftime before exploding for five unanswered goals in the second half to seal the win. Senior goalkeeper Melissa Painter (Elk Grove, Calif./William Penn University) finished with five saves for SXU.
Saint Xavier (9-2-1 overall/4-1 CCAC) stays at home to face CCAC rival Robert Morris College (Ill.) on Tuesday, October 4, at SXU Stadium. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
