CHICAGO - Senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) scored a game-high 18 points and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player as No. 9 Saint Xavier University (Ill.) cruised to a convincing 83-55 victory over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in Friday's championship game of the 2006 SXU Christmas Tip-off Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars improve to 15-1 overall this season with the victory and close out the month of December with a perfect 10-0 mark. In addition to Jackson, senior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) and junior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange) also represented SXU on the all-tournament squad.

Brown was the only other Saint Xavier player to score in double figures Friday posting 12 points, including three three-pointers. Sophomore forward Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica Academy), sophomore guard Sarah Wilson (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South), and freshman forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) each chipped in eight points in the winning effort. Junior forward Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) led the rebounding effort for SXU with nine rebounds, while Jackson helped lead the defensive front with a game-high four steals.

In the first half, SXU used a 16-0 run over an eight-minute stretch, which started near the 12-minute mark, to break a 9-9 tie and build a 25-9 lead. The Cougars closed out the half on a 10-5 run to take a 35-14 into halftime. The Saint Xavier defense frustrated St. Ambrose offense in the first half helping to cause 18 turnovers and holding the Queen Bees to just 18 percent shooting (4-for-22) from the field. In the game, SXU scored 28 of its 83 points off of 29 SAU turnovers.

The rest of the 2006 SXU Christmas Tip-off All-Tournament Team consisted of: senior forward Laura Panozzo (Siena Heights University), sophomore forward Michelle Hamblin (Calumet College), sophomore forward Jen Moor (Spring Arbor University), senior forward Amy Berry (Huntington College), junior center Kristin Allen (Culver-Stockton), sophomore guard Kristina Yedinak (University of St. Francis-Ill.), senior guard Cathy Mangan (St. Ambrose University), and senior forward Jennifer Goetz (St. Ambrose University).

Saint Xavier (15-1 overall) takes a break from its schedule until the New Year returning to action on Tuesday, January 9, with its conference opener against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Bourbonnais, Ill.
