CHICAGO - The No. 12 ranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team showed why it has had success this season when seven of its players were named to either the All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) First Team or as Honorable Mention selections Wednesday in Chicago. In addition, SXU head women's soccer coach Derek Begich was named the CCAC Coach of the Year after leading his Cougars to a 13-3-1 regular-season record, a No. 12 national ranking, and a No. 1 seed in the upcoming CCAC postseason tournament.
At the forward position, sophomore Lissa Coby (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community) earned first team recognition for Saint Xavier, while junior teammate Angie Holmes (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic) was named to the Honorable Mention team. Coby has led the Cougars in total points this season with 12 goals and 21 assists for 45 points. Holmes currently sits in a tie for the team-lead in goals (12) with Coby.
Saint Xavier also had two midfielders selected to the All-CCAC teams with senior midfielder Jen Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) taking first team honors and sophomore Aleks Sudar (Omaha, Neb./Omaha Bryan) earning honorable mention. Belmonte, a three-time All-CCAC selection, finished second on the team in scoring, tied with Holmes with 28 points. Sudar currently has four goals and eight assists this season for the Cougars.
Sophomore Cassie Rumpf (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) secured a spot on the All-CCAC First Team as a defender, while freshman Britney Kendzora (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) was named to the Honorable Mention team for SXU in the same position. The two Cougars helped lead a defensive front that allowed only 16 goals over 17 games thus far in 2005. Senior Melissa Painter (Elk Grove, Calif./William Penn University) was also named to the All-CCAC First Team as the lone goalkeeper. Painter had a stellar regular season in her first year with SXU starting all 17 games, recording 98 saves, and posting nine shutouts.
