Women's Basketball - Sat, Dec. 2, 2006
CHICAGO - A lay-up by senior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) with five seconds to play in regulation gave No. 17 Saint Xavier University an 89-88 upset win over No. 1 ranked Union University (Tenn.) in NAIA women's basketball action Saturday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. It is the Cougars third win already this season over a team ranked in the top 30 in the NAIA preseason poll, but SXU has never defeated a team ranked No. 1 overall in the seven-year history of the program.
Junior forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange) led all scorers with 19 points, while also leading the Cougars on the boards with eight rebounds. Jackson finished with 18 points and got her teammates involved in the scoring by dishing out a career-high 11 assists. Senior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) was tough as well for Saint Xavier chipping in 17 points, three rebounds, and four assists, while freshman guard Angie Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) demonstrated her offensive skills with 16 points on a 6-for-12 shooting performance from the field. Freshman guard Kaitlin Dudley led the Bulldogs in scoring with 18 points.
In the first half, SXU came out strong and took a 20-13 lead in the game's first seven minutes. However, a 17-7 scoring run by Union over the next five minutes changed the momentum of the game. The Bulldogs kept the lead the remainder of the half and pushed their advantage up to nine points, 48-39, heading into the break. In the first two minutes of the second half, Union extended its lead to double figures leading by as many as 14 points. The Cougars would not back down and slowly chipped away at the lead over the game's next eight minutes.
With just over eight minutes left in regulation, freshman forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) made a lay-up to cut the lead to four, 70-66. Just seconds later, Hannemann hit a pair of free throws to bring SXU to within two points, 70-68. A lay-up by Bush with five minutes to play gave the Cougars their first lead of the second half, 74-73. Saint Xavier kept the lead until a three-pointer by senior guard LaTorya Fuller put Union back ahead, 85-83. However, a pair of jumpers by Jackson and Brown as well as the lay-up by Jackson in the closing seconds helped seal the big victory for the Cougars.
SXU (7-1 overall) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., next weekend to take part in the two-day Olivet Nazarene University Classic. The Cougars open with 5:30 p.m. game against Missouri Baptist University (Mo.) on Friday, December 8 and then wrap up the event with a 1 p.m. contest against Taylor University (Ind.) on Saturday, December 9.
