Lebanon, Ill. - Despite a first-half goal by senior midfielder Jen Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), the No. 15 ranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team could not extend its school record-breaking win streak (nine games) to double digits Tuesday dropping a non-conference road game to McKendree College (Ill.), 3-1, in Lebanon, Ill. The loss drops the Cougars to 13-3-1 overall and completes their regular season slate.
SXU jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 26:13 left to play in the first half when sophomore defender Cassie Rumpf (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) found Belmonte open on a throw-in. However, McKendree tied the game, 1-1, with just less than 12 minutes remaining in the first half when freshman midfielder Laura Raymond scored off a corner kick from freshman midfielder Katelyn Cleveland.
McKendree scored two more unanswered goals in the second half. At the 61:20 mark, junior midfielder Jill Delabar found the back of the net on assists from junior forward Jenna Shellenberg and junior midfielder Katie Hubbard. With under a minute to play in regulation, Shellenberg recorded the game's final goal off another corner kick from Cleveland. The Bearcats outshot the Cougars, 17-6, in the game. Senior goalkeeper Melissa Painter (Elk Grove, Calif./William Penn University) finished Saturday's game with nine saves.
Saint Xavier (13-3-1 overall/8-1 CCAC) starts the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament on Friday, October 21, with a quarterfinals game at SXU Stadium at 3 p.m. The opponent for Friday's game has yet to be determined.
