CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University junior middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) and junior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) both earned first team honors on the 2006 NAIA All-Region VII Volleyball Team when the regional office announced the team Tuesday. It is the first time that the Cougars have placed two players on the NAIA Volleyball All-Region VII First Team since Kelly Hendry (Player of the Year) and Rannell Cunningham accomplished the feat following the 2000 season.
Breshock finished the season with a team-best 415 kills and .382 attack percentage. She was also second on the team in total blocks with 88, including 41 of the solo variety. Breshock played in all 43 of SXU's matches over the fall and helped lead the Cougars to their highest win total (23) since the 2000 season. Looby was Saint Xavier's primary setter finishing with 1,784 assists in addition to her stellar defensive play by leading the team with 390 digs. She was also one of SXU's best servers with a team-best 71 service aces this fall.
Saint Xavier (23-20 overall/7-2 CCAC) had a very successful 2006 season finishing with its highest win total (23) since the 2000 season when the team went 36-14 overall and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. The Cougars also earned their first NAIA Region VII Tournament appearance since the 2002 campaign losing in the quarterfinals to St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in three straight games last Wednesday.
