CHICAGO - Just a day after securing its first-ever postseason victory, the Saint Xavier University football team learned Sunday it will make the trip to Helena, Mont., on Saturday, November 25, to face No. 4 ranked and four-time defending national champion Carroll College (Mont.) in the quarterfinals of the 2006 NAIA Championship Series. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start (mountain time) at Nelson Stadium in Helena. The Cougars (9-2 overall) have never faced the Saints in their 14-year history.
Carroll is looking to become the first collegiate football program at any level (NCAA and NAIA) to win five consecutive national championships. Augustana College (Ill.), a NCAA Division III institution in Rock Island, Ill., is the only other college football program to win four straight national titles (1983-86). Carroll defeated No. 11 Montana State University-Northern, 20-7, in NAIA first-round action Saturday at Nelson Stadium. SXU defeated No. 7 Georgetown College (Ky.), 42-28, in its first-round game Saturday at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown, Ky.
"Our guys constantly hear me talk about Carroll College, because they are the standard of excellence at our level," said Saint Xavier head football coach Mike Feminis. "We've got the opportunity of a lifetime this weekend and we're going to enjoy the experience. For them to be going for their fifth straight national championship is unthinkable, but it has to end sometime. All I know is that we are playing with a ton of confidence right now and won't be intimidated by anyone."
