CHICAGO - Junior forward Angie Holmes (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic), scored three goals to lead the No. 15 ranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team to a 7-0 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory over visiting Calumet College (Ind.) Wednesday at SXU Stadium in Chicago. The Cougars pick up their eighth straight win improving to 12-2-1 overall and sit in a tie for first place in the CCAC standings with a 7-1 mark.
Saint Xavier took control of the game early scoring its first goal just over a minute and a half into the game when Holmes scored on a breakaway off an assist from sophomore forward Lissa Coby (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community). Three and a half minutes later, junior defender Kate Bingham (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X Catholic) gave SXU a 2-0 lead scoring off an assist from sophomore midfielder Aleks Sudar (Omaha, Neb./Bryan).
With just over 22 minutes remaining in the first half, Saint Xavier scored three goals within a 10-minute period to take a 5-0 lead into halftime. Junior midfielder Danielle Scartozzi (Crete, Ill./Calumet College) scored the first of the three goals off a Coby assist, Holmes picked up the second goal with 19:02 left in the half on a pass from Sudars, and Coby got the final score of the first half with 12:40 to play when sophomore defender Caitlin Thornburg (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) found her open for the assist.
The Cougars tacked on two more goals in the second half. Holmes tallied her third goal of the game just 40 seconds into the second half on Coby's third assist of the game. Coby then went on to score the seventh and final goal of the game with 25:05 left to play in regulation on an unassisted breakaway. Senior goalkeeper Melissa Painter (Elk Grove, Calif./William Penn University) finished with two saves and captured her eighth shutout of the season. SXU outshot Calumet, 34-2, in the game. Saint Xavier (12-2-1 overall/7-1 CCAC) will wrap up its CCAC schedule on the road facing Cardinal Stritch University (Wisc.) on Saturday, October 15. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
