Men's Cross Country - Sat, Sep. 3, 2005
CHICAGO - Led for the second straight week by sophomore Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington), the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team picked up a third-place finish Saturday at the Annual University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) Cross Country Meet at Horsebend Bend in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars were the only non-NCAA Division I team competing in the five-team meet, which fielded University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Chicago State University and the host UIC Flames. Individual placers for SXU were Bugarin, who finished fifth overall with a time of 21:21 over the 4.1 mile course. Next for the Cougars was Arturs Bareikis in 12th place with a 22:08 clocking. He was followed by Mike Demaj in 14th place at 22:22, Ronald Lavaire in 15th at 22:23, and Alex Walker in 27th place at 23:36. "I liked the way we ran and competed today," said Saint Xavier head men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "I felt that we clearly held our own against this tough field. I thought that we ran smart and tough. Everyone on the team has shown improved times over last weekend. I like the way that we are cutting the gaps between our runners. We face a very tough race next Friday in Peoria, but I feel that we will be ready." Saint Xavier ventures to Peoria, Ill., on Friday, September 9, to participate in the 19-team Bradley Open against some of the best collegiate teams in the Midwest. It will mark the first time this season that the Cougars will compete in a 8,000-meter event (8K), their regular competitional distance. The men's race will kick off at 5:30 p.m. at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
