Men's Cross Country - Fri, Sep. 16, 2005
South Bend, Ind - The Saint Xavier men's cross country team took part in the National Catholic Cross Country Invitational Championships hosted by the University of Notre Dame Friday in South Bend, Ind., and brought home a ninth place finish within the small college (NCAA-II, NCAA-III and NAIA) division out of the 20 teams represented. There were 33 teams overall competing in two different divisions and the Cougars finished 18th overall in this prestigious meet that features the top Catholic schools throughout the nation. The Cougars were well-represented within the 260 runners, who took part in Friday's meet. Sophomore Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) led SXU for the third straight week finishing in 45th place with a time of 26:38 on the five-mile course. Freshman Arturs Bareikis (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) was next for Saint Xavier in 66th overall with a 27:02 clocking. Freshman Maciej Demaj (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) was next, placing 95th in 27:33. Freshman Ronald Lavaire (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) was the following Cougar finisher, taking 115th place overall in 27:44, while freshman Alex Walker (Lake-in-the-Hills, Ill./Huntley) took 204th place in the meet with 28:59. "Overall, I feel pretty positive about the outcome of this weekend," stated Saint Xavier University head men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "The team is starting to come together as a more cohesive unit. With the abundance of youth on this team, the improvement of our freshmen is an ongoing work-in-progress. Steven continues to turn in better times each weekend and our freshmen continue to cut the gap among other runners. The highly competitive level of our scheduling is beginning to pay dividends and I feel strongly that very soon we will have four sub-27:00 runners." Saint Xavier travels to Davenport, Iowa, on Friday, September 23, to compete in the 35-team Augustana Invitational. The meet brings in the best of the NCAA-III and NAIA teams from throughout the Midwest. The men's race begins at 4:30 p.m.
