Carbondale, Ill. -
On Saturday, October 8, the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team made the long journey to Carbondale, Ill., to take part in Southern Illinois University's Saluki Invitational. SXU finished ninth out of the 10 teams competing at the Invitational and was the only NAIA team in a field of NCAA Division I and II squads. Southern Indiana University took the overall team title in the men's race.
For the first time this season, freshman Arturs Bareikis (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) led SXU across the finish line coming in 39th place among 100 runners with a time of 27:00 on the 8K course. Sophomore Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) was next for the Cougars at No. 43 overall with a 27:06 clocking. Bugarin was followed by freshman Maciej Demaj (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) in 46th place at 27:15. The final two runners for Saint Xavier were freshmen Ronald Lavaire (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) in 65th with a time of 27:55 and Alex Walker (Lake-in-the-Hills, Ill./Huntley) in 80th place at 29:00. "This was an outstanding meet against fantastic competition," remarked SXU men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "I felt that we handled ourselves quite well. The level of talent forced us to battle throughout this run. We are starting to get ready for the regional meet and the ability to continue to compete at this level continues to steel us. Arturs ran very well and we are grouping tighter each week." Saint Xavier travels to Kenosha, Wisc., on Saturday, October 15, to take part in the Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational. It marks the final regular-season meet for the Cougars before the Chicagoland Conference Championship on November 5 and the NAIA Region VII Qualifying Meet (Nov. 15). The 8K men's race at the UW-Parkside Invite kicks off at 1:45 p.m. Saturday. View meet results.
