CHICAGO - The Cougars competed in the Chicagoland Indoor Championships at the University of Chicago on February 18. Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) took seventh place in the 5000-meter run in a time of 15:37, while Ronald Lavaire (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) competed in the 800-meter well with a time of 2:03. This meet marked the first time that the Cougars were represented at the Chicagoland and also were able to score as a team.
On February 24, Saint Xavier took part in the Maroon Invitational at the University of Chicago. This meet also marks the last chance opportunity for the Cougars to post qualifying times for the Indoor NAIA Championships. Bugarin ran 15:47 for the 5000 meters, while Lavaire posted a 4:41 for the mile.
"This was an all-or-nothing' shot," said SXU head men's track coach Ed McAllister. "Therefore, caution was not an option. Ronald (Lavaire) ran well early, but needing a very fast time eventually wore him down. Steven (Bugarin) was hampered by the early slower pace. This caused him to fall off his pace. Neither guy ran their best race, but they approached this meet as they must to give themselves their best chances to qualify."
Steven Bugarin will next compete in the 3000-meter run at the NAIA Indoor National Championships on March 8 at Johnson City, Tennessee.
