Bourbonnais, Ill. - Junior Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) finished second overall with a time of 26:24.11 on the 8,000-meter course (8K) to lead the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team to a third-place finish at the 2006 NAIA Region VII and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Cross Country Championships Saturday in Bourbonnais, Ill. With his impressive time, Bugarin automatically qualified for the 2006 NAIA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday, November 18, at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

Other finishers for the Cougars Saturday included: sophomore Ronald Lavaire (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) in 12th place with a time of 27:28.18, freshman Eli Hoffman (Mount Morris, Ill./Oregon) at No. 16 overall with a 27:42.94 clocking, sophomore Maciej Demaj (Lockport, Ill./Reavis) in 20th place at 27:53.62, freshman Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) at No. 34 with a time of 28:26.98, and freshman Matt Miller (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) rounded things out in 46th place with a 29:07.34 clocking. SXU finished the meet in third place with 82 team points, while host Olivet Nazarene University won the event with 37 total points and Robert Morris College (Ill.) finished second with 74 points.

This was the final team meet of the season for Saint Xavier. Bugarin will compete individually at the NAIA National Championships on Saturday, November 18, with the men's race scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. (eastern). Last season, he finished 107th overall out of a field of 262 runners with a time of 26:20.25 on the 8K course in Louisville.
