Men's Basketball - Fri, Nov. 3, 2006
Irvine, Calif. - Despite a team-high 11 points and four rebounds by freshman guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team could not keep pace with NCAA Division I University of California-Irvine falling, 82-65, in season-opening exhibition play late Thursday night at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif. The Cougars kept the game close through the first 35 minutes of play trailing by one, 32-31, at the half, but could not stop a late run by the Anteaters in the closing minutes.
Scott was the only player for SXU to score in double figures. Senior guard Ken McCormick (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), junior forward Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), and sophomore guard Paris VonShae Davis (Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph) each chipped in nine points for Saint Xavier. In his first game back after sitting out all of last season with a knee injury, junior center Kevin Lowe (Tinley Park, Ill./Eastern Illinois) posted six points and four rebounds as well for the Cougars. SXU shot an impressive 52 percent (26-for-50) in Wednesday's game, but could not overcome 21 turnovers.
Saint Xavier officially opens its regular season on Saturday, November 4, against NAIA foe The Master's College (Calif.) in Santa Clarita, Calif. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (pacific).
