Olathe, Kan. - Heading into the semifinals of the 2006 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Region VII Tournament on Friday, November 3, the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team owns the No. 8 national ranking (tied for its highest ever ranking) in the final NAIA women's soccer top 25 rating of the season released Wednesday by the national office. SXU will host both the semifinals and finals of this year's NAIA Region VII Women's Soccer Tournament with the No. 1 seeded Cougars facing No. 5 seeded Trinity International University (Ill.) in the opening game Friday at 11 a.m. at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
"This is the first time in our program's history that we have been ranked in the top 10 in the season's final poll," said Saint Xavier University women's soccer coach Derek Begich. "The team has worked hard throughout the fall and it is nice to see all the determination pay off. We have played together as a team all season and this is a huge honor for both our program and the University."
Saint Xavier (17-3 overall/7-2 CCAC) takes on No. 5 seed Trinity International in semifinals action Friday at 11 a.m. before No. 2 seed William Penn (Iowa) and No. 6 seed Trinity Christian match up in the day's second semifinal game at 1:30 p.m. The two winners will play in Saturday's championship game at 1:30 p.m. at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field with the champion receiving an automatic bid to the 2006 NAIA National Tournament, which begins on Thursday, November 16.
