Bourbonnais, Ill. - Averaging 10.5 kills per match, junior middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) helped the Saint Xavier University volleyball team split its four weekend matches at the Olivet Nazarene University CCAC-MCC Challenge in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars (20-18 overall/5-2 CCAC) got off to a rough start dropping its Friday matches to St. Ambrose (Iowa) and Mount Mercy (Iowa), but bounced back on Saturday with wins over Waldorf (Iowa) and William Penn (Iowa), respectively.

SXU went toe-to-toe with St. Ambrose in its first match Friday, but fell in five games 30-26, 25-30, 31-33, 30-24, 10-15. Sophomore right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) led the Cougars with 14 kills, while Breshock finished with 13 kills and five total blocks. Junior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) finished with 61 assists and 29 digs and senior outside hitter Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) led the defense with 37 digs.

Mount Mercy was able to beat Saint Xavier in three straight games 28-30, 21-30, 23-30 in the late match Friday. Junior outside hitter Jessica Synowiecki (Oak Lawn, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) led the offensive charge for SXU with 12 kills, while senior outside hitter Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace) was tough defensively with 19 digs. Junior middle blocker Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was also strong on the defensive side with eight total blocks, including eight solos.

Day two was a different story as the Cougars jumped out to a big win over Waldorf (Iowa) in four games 30-25, 30-16, 24-30, 30-26 on Saturday morning. Breshock finished with 15 kills and five total blocks, while Pedigo posted 11 kills and 34 digs. Gullickson was solid for SXU as well recording 13 kills, 29 digs, two service aces, and three total blocks.

The Cougars continued their winning ways in the afternoon match defeating William Penn (Iowa) in three games 30-22, 30-22, 30-22. Pedigo led the offense with 10 kills and 17 digs, while Synowiecki tallied nine kills and 12 digs in the winning effort. Junior libero Emily Soto (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Junior College) led the defense with 19 digs and Looby finished the match with 35 assists.

Saint Xavier (20-18 overall/5-2 CCAC) hosts CCAC rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Thursday, November 2, at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
