CHICAGO - A header off a corner kick by senior midfielder Almir Hot (Belgrade, Serbia/Lindenwood University) in the 85th minute of regulation broke up a 1-1 tie and lifted the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over visiting Aquinas College (Mich.) in non-conference action Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Senior midfielder Fabian Neprjachin (Halle, Germany/Bellevue University) provided the assist for the Cougars on the game-winning goal.
SXU opened up the game's scoring with a goal in the 20th minute on a header by junior forward Alex Duncan (Orland Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) off a cross pass from freshman defender Seamus Ryan (Alsip, Ill./Mount Carmel). Trailing 1-0 heading into the second half, Aquinas College was able to tie the game, 1-1, on a goal by sophomore midfielder Jarod Smith on an assist from junior defender Ezequeil Rodriguez. Just over 10 minutes later, the Cougars capitalized on the corner kick attempt with the game-winning goal by Hot. Saint Xavier outshot Aquinas, 5-3, in the game and had nine corner kicks to just two by the Saints.
SXU (2-2 overall) continues its home stand with another non-conference match-up against William Penn University (Iowa) on Sunday, September 10, at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Game time is slated for 1:30 p.m.
